Peter Senge

Peter Senge is a Senior Lecturer at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Founding Chair of the Society of Organizational Learning (SoL), a global network of people and institutions working together for systemic change (http://www.solon- His work centers on promoting shared understanding of complex issues and shared leadership for creating healthier human systems. Today, this involves major cross-sector collaborative projects focused on global food systems, climate change, circular (zero waste) business models and regenerative economies, and youth leadership and the future of education. Peter is the author of The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization (Doubleday, 1990 and 2006). More than two million copies of this book have been sold worldwide, and it was recognized by Harvard Business Review as “one of the seminal management books of the past 75 years,” and by the Financial Times as one of five “most important” management books. He is also coauthor of the three Fieldbooks: The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook: Strategies and Tools for Building a Learning Organization (Doubleday, 1994); The Dance of Change: The Challenges to Sustaining Momentum in Learning Organizations (Doubleday, 1999), and this volume. Peter’s other books include The Necessary Revolution: How Individuals and Organizations are Working Together to Create a Sustainable World (with Bryan Smith, Nina Kruschwitz, Joe Laur, and Sara Schley) (Doubleday, 2008); and Presence: Human Purpose and the Field of the Future (with C. Otto Scharmer, Joseph Jaworski, and Betty Sue Flowers) (SoL, 2004). The Journal of Business Strategy named him as one of the twenty-four people who had the greatest influence on business strategy in the twentieth century. He has a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University (where he received the F.E. Terman senior engineering award) and a master’s and Ph.D. from MIT. He lives in central Massachusetts.
